The phosphodiesterase 4B (PDE4B) interacts with disrupted-in-schizophrenia 1 (DISC1), which is a known genetic risk factor for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder (MDD).
Thus, the present observations suggest that dysregulation of intracellular signaling mediated by PDE4B is a significant factor in the cause and expression, respectively, of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and that targeting PDE4B-regulated signaling pathways may yield new therapies to treat the totality of these disorders.
Twenty-six tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms were selected across the PDE4B gene and genotyped in DNA samples from 386 schizophrenia cases, 368 bipolar disorder cases and 455 controls.
