Additionally, in about 40% of ccRCC cases the mutation in <i>PBRM1</i> (<i>POLYBROMO1</i>) gene coding for a non-core subunit of SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex was found suggesting potential impairment of this complex function in ccRCC.
PBRM1 encodes for BAF180, a component of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex, and is inactivated in, on average, 36% of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC).
Recently, exome sequencing studies have revealed that the SWI/SNF (switch/sucrose nonfermentable) members PBRM1 and ARID1A are mutated in ccRCC, and it has also been suggested that aberrant chromatin regulation is a key step in kidney cancer pathogenesis.
