This was done in light of the effect of SGLT-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is) that has been highlighted by some studies, showing an increased incidence of bladder cancer, particularly with use of empagliflozin.
There is no evidence linking SGLT2 inhibitors with an increased risk of cancer, but these agents, particularly dapagliflozin, should be used with caution in patients with hematuria or a history of bladder cancer.
The available data do not point to a causative role of SGLT2 inhibitors on malignancy risk, however, these drugs should be used with caution in patients with known hematuria or history of bladder cancer.
For pre-specified cancer types, the risk of bladder cancer might be increased with SGLT2 inhibitors (OR 3.87 [95% CI 1.48, 10.08]), especially empagliflozin (OR 4.49 [95% CI 1.21, 16.73]).
