Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) astrocytopathy, an autoimmune central nervous system disorder with a specific GFAP-IgG, often coexists with other antibodies.
To dissect the role of C5a in CNS disease, we developed a transgenic mouse that produces C5a exclusively in the brain using the astrocyte-specific, murine glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) promoter.
To evaluate this hypothesis we evaluated human surgical/autopsy specimens from a variety of CNS disorders that induce astrogliosis and an experimental CNS needle injury model in wild type and GFAP:Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) transgenic mice.
