One hundred and seventy-nine patients with various forms of glomerulonephritis confirmed histologically were tested for HLA A and B antigens: Thirty-four with membranous glomerulonephritis were also typed for DR antigens.
Immunogenetics and immunopathology of human primary membranous glomerulonephritis: HLA-A, B, DR antigens; functional activity of splenic macrophage Fc-receptors and peripheral blood T-lymphocyte subpopulations.
The pathogenesis of Heymann nephritis, a rat model of human membranous glomerulonephritis, depends on the interaction of autoantibodies with a renal glycoprotein (GP330) on glomerular podocytes.
The expression of TNF-alpha by glomerular epithelial cells exclusively and universally in biopsies showing a membranous morphology strongly suggests this cytokine has a role in the pathogenesis of membranous nephropathy.
Characterization of a glomerular epithelial cell metalloproteinase as matrix metalloproteinase-9 with enhanced expression in a model of membranous nephropathy.
We examined the paraffin section of kidney biopsies from 40 chronic HBsAg carriers with membranous nephropathy (MGN), mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis (MCGN) or IgA nephropathy (IgAN) for HBV DNA and HBV RNA using in situ hybridization (ISH).
Among 61 nephritis patients and four normal subjects investigated in the present study, Jak3 was selectively localized to glomerular epithelia of IgA-N patients (14/34 cases) and focal glomerulosclerosis patients (1/5 cases), but not detected in minimal changes (n = 6), membranous glomerulonephropathy (n = 7), crescentic glomerulonephritis (n = 4), lupus nephritis patients (n = 5), and normal subjects (n = 4).
The relationship between expression of TGF-beta 1 protein or TGF-beta 1 mRNA and tissue damage was investigated using the enzyme-antibody and in situ hybridization method in frozen slices of renal tissue from 30 patients: 25 with glomerulonephritis (18 with immunoglobulin A nephropathy; two with focal glomerulosclerosis, one with membranous nephropathy, one with crescentic glomerulonephritis and three with lupus nephritis) and five control patients with minimal change disease.
The TGF-beta1/beta-actin mRNA ratios were highest in membranous nephropathy (466.4 +/- 133.4, n = 11), followed by lupus nephritis (394.9 +/- 94.8, n = 12) and diabetic nephropathy (333.2 +/- 97.6, n = 10).
These results show that the TAP1-Val-333 like HLA-DR3 phenotype is positively associated with membranous nephropathy and that these two risk factors are not cumulative in membranous nephropathy pathophysiology.
