Higher serum growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) is a biomarker of inherited mitochondrial myopathy disease and is associated with mortality in several age-related diseases.
Mitochondrial myopathy (MM) is the most common manifestation of adult-onset mitochondrial disease and shows a multifaceted tissue-specific stress response: (1) transcriptional response, including metabolic cytokines FGF21 and GDF15; (2) remodeling of one-carbon metabolism; and (3) mitochondrial unfolded protein response.
Overall specificities of FGF21 and GDF15 to find patients with mitochondrial myopathy were 89.3% vs 86.4%, and sensitivities 67.3% and 76.0%, respectively.
