The research was designed to study the significance of artesunate (ART) on the expression of transforming growth factor (TGF-β1) and small mother against decapentaplegic (SMAD3) in rabbit's ear hypertrophic scar model.
TGF-β1, by activating both Smad3 and p38, induces TSP-4, which in turn not only presents a positive feedback regulation on the activation of Smad3 and p38, but also essentially mediates TGF-β1-induced HS formation.
Our data indicate that BRD4 and CDK9 have independent, coordinated roles in promoting the myofibroblast transition and suggest that inhibition of the Smad3-BRD4 pathway may be a useful strategy to limit hypertrophic scar formation after burn injury.
