EWS, TAF15 and the nuclear import receptor transportin have been shown to co-accumulate with FUS in neuronal inclusions specifically in FTLD-FUS, with transportin-positive inclusions most frequently observed.
Of the FET (fused in sarcoma [FUS]/Ewing sarcoma protein [EWS]/TATA binding protein-associated factor 15 [TAF15]) family of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein particle proteins, FUS and TAF15 are consistently and EWS variably found in inclusion bodies in neurodegenerative diseases such as frontotemporal lobar degeneration associated with FUS.
All members of the FET family (FUS, EWS, TAF15) are co-accumulating with their nuclear import receptor Transportin in FTLD-FUS which is usually not associated with FUS mutations, whilst ALS-FUS is almost always associated with FUS mutations and reveals only FUS aggregates.
