After inhibiting or knocking down G6PD/GSH, the capacity of endothelial cells for monocyte recruitment was assessed by determining the expression of the adhesion molecules intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), which was upregulated by G6PD deficiency and accompanied by the presence of the oxidative stress markers NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and reactive oxygen species (ROS).
