We characterized the genetic variation and haplotype diversity of four hypertension candidate genes (CLCNKA, CLCNKB, BSND, NEDD4L) in four different ethnic groups (Caucasian Americans, African-Americans, Han Chinese, and Mexican-Americans).
Upregulation of apical sodium-chloride cotransporter and basolateral chloride channels is responsible for the maintenance of salt-sensitive hypertension.
In addition, loss-of-function mutations of CLCNKB and BSND genes cause Bartter's syndrome (BS), whereas CLCNKA and CLCNKB gain-of-function polymorphisms predispose to a rare form of salt sensitive hypertension.
