To investigate this, we infected mice depleted of platelet GPVI or CLEC2 by antibody treatment or GPVI-/- mice with the common human sepsis pathogen <i>Klebsiella pneumoniae</i> via the airways to induce pneumonia-derived sepsis.
The role for GPVI in platelet function in inflammation and in the evolution and treatment of major illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis, cancer and sepsis is also discussed.
Additionally, patients admitted to a paediatric intensive care unit (ICU) (<i>n</i> = 73) with an initial diagnosis of sepsis were recruited and their GPVI haplotypes determined.
