Following an OFLT, the postprandial mRNA expression of FKBP5, and DDIT4 was downregulated while that of DHRS9 was overexpressed, both in nondiabetic normolipidemic subjects and in insulin-resistant subjects with abdominal obesity.
The FK506-binding protein 51 (FKBP51) has emerged as a key regulator of endocrine stress responses in mammals and as a potential therapeutic target for stress-related disorders (depression, post-traumatic stress disorder), metabolic disorders (obesity and diabetes) and chronic pain.
We conclude the review by emphasizing missing knowledge gaps that remain and future research opportunities needed to implement FKBP51 as a drug target for stress-related obesity or T2D.
