We considered the expression of Forkhead box M1 (<i>FOXM1</i>) and apolipoprotein E (<i>APOE</i>) genes, which are responsible for cell proliferation, differentiation, tumorigenesis, and increased risk of lung cancer, in the lung bronchial tissue of patients exposed to SM.
In lung cancer tissues, ApoE expression was more frequently found in malignant pleural effusions (MPE)-associated lung adenocarcinoma than in lung adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma without MPE (P<0.05), indicating that ApoE is associated with the pathogenesis of MPE in patients with lung adenocarcinoma.
Increased apolipoprotein E gene expression and protein concentration in lung cancer tissue do not contribute to the clinical assessment of non-small cell lung cancer patients.
