Results from this expanded meta-analysis, which included our own new study, suggest that rs6295 (C-1019G) and rs878567 in HTR1A are related to the pathophysiology of MDs, with overlap between MDD and BP.
Our study used in situ hybridization to quantify 5-HT(1A), 5-HT(1B), and 5-HT(2A) mRNA levels in the hippocampus (HC) and 5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(2A) mRNA levels in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of subjects with a history of major depression disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BPD), schizophrenia, and a normal comparison group (15 subjects per group).
In conclusion, our study does not provide evidence that the 5-HT1A gene plays either a major or a minor role in the genetic predisposition to schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, or Tourette's syndrome.
