Apolipoprotein J (ApoJ) is considered to be a novel predictive factor of vascular restenosis and is associated with a large number of processes related to atherosclerosis and cell-cycle phases.
Clusterin (CLU) (or Apolipoprotein [Apo] J) levels have been reported to be elevated during the progression of postangioplasty restenosis and atherosclerosis.
Like the ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein E gene (APOE), the clusterin gene (CLU) is a risk locus for Alzheimer's disease, and may play additional roles in atherosclerosis pathogenesis.
We conclude that: (a) mildly oxidized LDL can induce an increased apoJ/PON ratio, and (b) the apoJ/PON ratio may prove to be a better predictor of atherosclerosis than the total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio.
