The aim of our present study was to evaluate the impact of genetic variations in the GPX3 gene and plasma GPx-3 antigen levels on ischemic stroke in young Asian Indians.
Promoter polymorphisms in the plasma glutathione peroxidase gene (GPX3), which encodes a major antioxidant enzyme implicated in post-translational modification of fibrinogen, have been implicated as risk factors for arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) and cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT) in young adults.
We recently identified a haplotype (H(2)) in the GPx-3 gene promoter that increases the risk of arterial ischemic stroke among children and young adults.
The aim of this study is to identify polymorphisms in the GPx-3 gene, examine their relationship to arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) in a large series of children and young adults, and determine their functional molecular consequences.
