Although overexpression of renal Smad7 had no effect on levels of blood glucose, it significantly attenuated the development of microalbuminuria, TGF-β/Smad3-mediated renal fibrosis such as collagen I and IV and fibronectin accumulation and NF-κB/p65-driven renal inflammation including IL-1β, TNF-α, MCP-1, and ICAM-1 expression and macrophage infiltration in diabetic rats.
1,25(OH)2D3 and EB 1089 inhibit PBMC proliferation, induce apoptosis in PBMC of healthy subjects and IBD patients, and affect ICAM-1 expression on PBMC and on HUVEC cocultured with PBMC, suggesting that the ICAM-1 downregulation could provide a new target for controlling the recruitment of leukocytes at the sites of inflammation in IBD.
Our finding of increased concentrations of ICAM-1 in SLE patients with nephritis underlines the importance of inflammation and endothelial involvement in this disease, but their predictive value in the disease monitoring need to be further studied.
