Elevated lipoprotein(a), hypertension and renal insufficiency as predictors of coronary artery disease in patients with genetically confirmed heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
Lipid and lipoprotein parameters, including levels of total, HDL, and LDL cholesterol; triglycerides; lipoprotein(a); apolipoprotein A-IV; and the apolipoprotein E and A-IV polymorphisms, were assessed in 177 patients who had mostly mild to moderate renal insufficiency and were followed prospectively for up to 7 yr.
Increased serum concentrations of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] have been established as a genetically controlled risk factor for these diseases and have been demonstrated in patients with moderate renal failure, suggesting that this lipoprotein contributes to the increased cardiovascular risk seen in these patients.
