Analysis of in vivo metastases and clinical data from patients with prostate cancer support the proposition that the PGC1α/c-MYC/ODC1 axis regulates polyamine biosynthesis and prostate cancer aggressiveness.
These mRNAs encode proteins that play significant roles in all aspects of malignancy including angiogenesis factors (VEGF, FGF-2), onco-proteins (c-myc, cyclin D1, ODC), pro-survival proteins (survivin, BCL-2) and proteins involved in tumor invasion and metastasis (MMP-9, heparanase).
The tumor:normal (T:N) ratio of ODC mRNA expression in esophageal specimens has a significant correlation with tumor-node-metastasis staging (P = 0.043), lymph node metastasis (P = 0.039), vascular vessel invasion (P = 0.035), and histology (P = 0.034) of the tumor.
