To investigate the characteristics of GM3 synthase, SAT-I mRNA and ganglioside GM3 expression levels in lung cancer, we examined the expression levels of SAT-I mRNA as well as GM3 in 40 tumor tissues surgically removed from non-small cell lung cancer patients.
Two active copies of the X-linked gene spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase (SSAT) in a female lung cancer cell line are associated with an increase in sensitivity to an antitumor polyamine analogue.
These results have significance both for the potential use of polyamine analogues in treating specific forms of human lung cancer and for understanding the regulation of SSAT at the molecular level.
