<b>Context:</b> Increased vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) has been reported to be a critical link between obesity and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases while dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) has been implicated in the development of disrupted glucose regulation and inflammation.
In multivariable models in the spontaneous indications subsample, elevated IL-6 on day 1 predicted obesity (odds ratio: 2.9; 95% confidence limits: 1.2, 6.8), whereas elevated VCAM-1 on day 14 predicted overweight at 2 years of age (odds ratio: 2.3; 95% confidence limits: 1.2, 4.3).ConclusionsIn this cohort, neonatal systemic inflammation preceded the onset of obesity, suggesting that inflammation might contribute to the development of obesity.
Here we delineated an inflammation-driven inhibitory mechanism of beige adipogenesis in obesity that required direct adhesive interactions between macrophages and adipocytes mediated by the integrin α<sub>4</sub> and its counter-receptor VCAM-1, respectively; expression of the latter was upregulated in obesity.
