Using immunohistochemistry (IHC), we evaluated 3β-HSD type 1 expression in 161 human breast cancers and analyzed correlations of 3β-HSD type 1 expression with various clinicopathological factors.
In this paper the potential role of polymorphic genes encoding for enzymes involved in oestrogen biosynthesis (CYP17, CYP19, and 17beta-HSD) and conversion of the oestrogen metabolites and their by-products (COMT, CYP1A1, CYP1B1, GSTM1, GSTM3, GSTP1, GSTT1 and MnSOD) in modulating individual susceptibility to breast cancer are reviewed.
We have recently showed that interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13 induce 3beta-HSD type 1 gene expression in human breast cancer cell lines as well as in normal human mammary epithelial cells.
The potent stimulatory effect of these cytokines on 3beta-HSD activity was also observed in the ER- MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cell line and in normal human mammary epithelial cells (HMECs) in primary culture.
