GDF-15 is a promising biomarker for prediction of HF and death due to CHD in the general population, which may provide prognostic information to already established clinical biomarkers.
In 14 577 patients with stable CHD participating in the Stabilization of Atherosclerotic Plaque by Initiation of Darapladib Therapy Trial (STABILITY), GDF-15 and other prognostic biomarkers (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, high-sensitivity troponin T, cystatin C, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) were measured.
Plasma levels of novel biomarkers were significantly elevated (sST2, GDF-15, H-FABP, suPAR) or inversely downregulated (fetuin A) in patients with AMI compared to a control group with excluded coronary artery disease.
